this weekend i went home to Marbletown, to spend time with a kitten, a pup and my parents. the macaroons were a huge hit, although i think i can credit the praise because i fed them to my mom, dad and little sister.
Sunday afternoon i woke up and made Blueberry Vegan Pancakes for brunch. Mom and Dan and I ate them while watching Shark Week. After a fairly long food coma, induced by said pancakes
i wanted desperately to go to a pool. I have not been submerged in chlorine for over a year now, and that just seems ludicrous and sad. I hopped into my bathing suit, Shmoops dug out some beach towels, and just as I was leafing through the stack of tabloids, choosing which ones were pool perfect, THUNDERBOOMDEATHCLOUDS.
well, we were rained out, to say the least. i fell asleep by the window, listening to the rain, reading a book of poetry i couldn't quite understand. after a dreamless sleep, i awoke to more rain. it had not stopped.
I grudgingly took off my bathing suit, and replaced it with a Jack Daniels t-shirt and orange sweatpants. (it looks just as bad as it sounds)
All mopey i walk downstairs, and flip on the Food Network. Mom tries to cheer me up by saying that the storm will pass, but by 330, i had submitted to the rainy Sunday ahead of me. This is when (and when the macaroons ran out) shmoops had a wonderful idea!
"why don't you spend the afternoon making something you have never made before. that requires counter space you normally don't have?"
that day, a peach pie was born.
I made the dough. I had never made pie/pizza/any sort of dough before. I was gentle and patient. The dough cracked a bit, (too much flour) but i worked it on a floured surfaced until i could mold it into an acceptable, work-able piece of dough.
and then i got it! well, i got it as much as someone who was making dough for the first time....right?
The general consensus was that...well dan loves pie, no matter what. Shmoops likes peach pie, and me? well i eat most everything. So peach pie it was! The filling was so simple. I skinned a quart of peaches (about 9-11 peaches. not too ripe, a bit firm), a handful of sugar (i forget specifics) and the rind and juice of one orange.
Now, the only change I would make, aside from an overall perfection of the pie crust (which is truly the test of an exceptional baker) i would not use nearly as much juice from the orange. I used a Valencia Orange, generally used specifically for juicing. As i was pouring the peach mixture into the crust, a considerable amount of orange juice was left.
Here was my moment of truth. To pour or not to pour. I took considerable liberties, blaming everything on my virgin pie skills. So i POURED! what of it? jealous?!
here is the end result:
I was glad! and not sunburnt, which would have been the result if my original sunday plan had been put in action.
bon appetit.
